Phakic Lens

Phakic lens

When myopia is severe, that is between -8.00 and -20.00 dt, or that laser surgery is contraindicated, we can implant a permanent phakic intra-ocular lens (without removing the natural lens) in front of the iris.

If you want to experience a new view of life without glasses or contacts, and you’ve been told that LASIK isn’t right for you, the AcrySof® CACHET™ phakic lens can help.

“The AcrySof® CACHET™ phakic lens works with your natural lenses to help focus light for sharper distance vision. As part of a vision correction procedure known as phakic surgery, the AcrySof® CACHET™ phakic lens is implanted in the anterior chamber of your eye. Once in place, phakic lenses add the focusing power you need to help correct high myopia. It’s like wearing your glasses or contacts all the time – but without all the hassle!”

This technique is reversible, so if there are some uncomfortable side effects, the lens can be removed. Also, this surgery does not increase the risk of retinal detachment associated with high myopia. A loss of endothelial cells is however a potential risk related to this surgery. The cells will be calculated at different interval to prevent this complication and according to the results the lens may have to be removed. Laser enhancement surgeries are also included during the whole follow-up period.

Because this surgery does not involve the natural lens of the eye, your near vision is not altered. Consequently, accommodation is not expected to be affected in patients less than 45 years of age. However, because the ability of the eye to accommodate gradually diminishes after 45 years old (presbyopia), patients in this age category will need reading glasses to improve their near vision.
